Manage Your Blog Like a Good Relationship

bloggingrelationshipimage.jpgBlogs are a lot like relationships, you see good ones and bad ones.

Here are some useful comparisons to help you blog successfully (and maybe help out your love life too ;) ):

  • The best relationships survive the bad points. - Whilst the best relationships (and blogs) have fewer bad points they will undoubtedly encounter some. The sign of a good blog is one that can handle the good times and more importantly the bad. The bad points are a test of your commitment, and will really let you know if your heart is truly in what you’re doing. Don’t keep going for the sake of it though, you need to work out what will make you happy. If you really love what you’re doing then you’ll fight through the bad points, if you don’t, you’ll give up.
  • It’s not all about sex. - I use sex in blogging terms to apply to the temporary buzz you get from say a Digg spike (ok that was a nerdy comparison…). In the end this isn’t what matters, but it sure feels good at the time. You need to build a long term growth, and as cheesy as it sounds learn to love your blog. If the Digg spike is sex in blogging terms, then a slow but steady rise in traffic is a solid relationship. Great relationships take time, hard work, but will hopefully pay off.
  • Sometimes YOU have to put in ALL the work. - Just like relationships blogging can feel very one sided at times. You’re putting in all the effort and not getting a whole lot back. What’s important to remember is that this can change. If you keep putting in the effort then your blog will begin to give you things which you never expected. You’ll make new friends, achieve unpredicted respect, and be helping more people than you thought possible.
  • It doesn’t hurt to splash out sometimes. - No matter how non-material your partner claims to be they will always appreciate a thoughtful gift or expense on your part. Consider buying your blog some new clothes (get a redesign ;) ) or take her out (advertise).
  • I hope that these tips were useful and not too cheesy haha. I welcome any comments as usual! :)

    1. Your analogy is very interesting! Blogging is like a relationship, only that monogamy is seen differently by bloggers :))
      Nice post, like always. Thanks

    2. Haha thanks :) I almost mentioned that blogs unlike relationships can’t suddenly fail in an instant (they more decline over time if not taken care of) but I didn’t want to be pessimistic heh.

    3. Hey Tom! I just wanted to tell you that I’ve been working on my “relationship” with my blog, and have just launched a contest. I plan to hold contests on my blog all the time from now on, and everybody’s invited. If I may, this is the link to it: http://megavegalicious.com/2008/02/27/my-very-first-contest-everyones-invited/
      Thanks!
