Coming Soon - Blogging Diary!

A couple of days ago I had a great idea for a weekly feature to add to Push Standards. Instead of posting the generic ‘how to get more traffic’ articles seen on many sites, I thought that I would post a weekly ‘blogging diary’. The diary will be completely unbiased, just a factual account of what I’ve done to my blog for each day that week. I won’t be telling you ‘this is how to get 100 subscribers!’ or anything like that. Instead each day I’m spending 10 minutes noting down everything that I’ve done in terms of content and promotion. The diary will work as a real-life example of how a blog can grow, and nothing will be left out. I’m willing to be completely open, and share my successes and failures. I want people to learn from my mistakes, but also to profit from my gains.

For each day so far I’ve recorded my unique visitors, page views, return visitors and rss subscribers. I’ve also written any promotion I’ve done, articles I’ve written and other essential information. On Tuesday of next week I will post a graph of my stats for this week so that you can see how the site has grown. The idea is similar to Google Trends, but rather than simply providing a rough explanation for traffic surges you will get a full account of everything happening with the blog each day. Now how many blogs do you know that are that open with their stats/strategies? At the end of each month I will post the final weekly update, and make sure to include a summary of the month as a whole. Whilst this will take up quite a lot of my time, spread over multiple days it should be easily possible. I really think that this could be a valuable resource for new bloggers who are keen to see how to expand their blogs.

Please let me know what you think of the idea, and check back Tuesday to see my in depth report!

In other site news I’ve improved the blog in various ways:

  • I’ve added an option to subscribe at the top of each post and the homepage in an effort to gain more subscribers, see if this is successful in my first blogging diary on Tuesday!
  • I’ve added categories! This is quite an important improvement for me, as it will save my visitors lots of time finding the articles they want.
  • I’ve fixed the ‘older posts’ link at the bottom of the homepage. It now works fine and you can easily go back and read my older posts.
  • I always appreciate opinions on the site so far, so please post your feedback in the comments section. Thanks!

    1. I would just like to stress how excited I am about this idea. I know that some blogs already post about how they become successful, but I’ve never seen something done in such a detailed, systematic way as I’m planning - literally leaving nothing out. I think that it will be particularly useful when all the weeks can be joined together a few months down the line to show a hopefully huge growth.

    2. I think this is a great idea and I am looking forward to seeing your posts on this!

    3. This is a great idea, Tom! I was actually going to mention the categories in my upcoming review of your site. Speaking of that, I hope to have it posted this weekend!

I think your site is really coming together well. You take pride in your work, and it definitely shows!

    4. Thanks both of you, I look forward to posting come Tuesday (although it’s quite a scary thought that you’ll then know everything I know!)

Tish: That would be great about the review, I can’t wait to read it!

      Cheers!

    5. I find that this will be more interesting than knowing how much a blog earned. Since the more traffic the more a blog earns. It would be good if you can also write what changes you made to your blog that increased traffic etc…

    6. Hi David, thanks for the interest. Yeah the whole idea is that I’m documenting every single thing I’m doing each day so you will be able to see exactly what has driven the most traffic to my website. Check back Tuesday for the full report :)
